As much as ignorance of the law is not an excuse, how much of enlightenment has been going on in respect of the new tax reforms?

Let us first put the blame on State Tax Authorities who have clearly failed to do enough. They might come for me under this post, but that’s absolutely fine. We are yet to see campaigns in local dialects on radio and television, yet you want taxpayers to comply.

Next is the Federal Revenue collecting agency, the Chief Tax Collector. Your role is also enlightenment and compliance rather than enforcement when there is a default. We are yet to see.

Professional Bodies nko? CITN, ANAN, CITN, NBA, etc, how far?

As an Independent Consultant, in January 2024, I hosted a training on tax awareness for MSMEs in Jos, and only 30 MSMEs attended. Well that was a good turnout. It was a paid class.

In May 2024, I repeated the session, still in Jos, only 15 attended.

In January 2025, I hosted another training in Jos, this time MSMEs from outside Jos even attended and only 2 individuals from the government agency paid for themselves to attend and the turnout was over 30 participants These we have consistently done with my Senior Colleague Dr. Tony Garba FCNA, FCTI.

Just imagine if more Consultants embark on this kind of enlightenment to keep MSMEs and individuals well guided and prepared on what to expect and do.

We plan to host another 2 day virtual session still on this tax reforms that will be a paid session. I have come to settle with the fact that, what people don’t pay for, they don’t pay attention to.

On this tax reform issue, whether you pay attention to it or not, it will affect you.
